Prawns and shrimps are very rich in proteins. 100 gm of prawn or shrimp
contains about 21 gm of protein but only about 90 calories and less than 1 g of
fat. In comparison, 100 gm other high protein source like red meat contains
only 10 gm of protein but 100 calories and up to 8 gm of fat, mostly saturated
ones as well.
Besides, prawns and shrimp contain omega-3 fatty acids, the same
healthy fat found in salmon that is touted to prevent heart disease. Given that
salmon populations are falling worldwide, prawns and shrimp should be a good
substitute.
Prawns
and shrimps also contain other nutrients such as vitamin B12, and essential
minerals like zinc, iodine, selenium and iron. Calcium, magnesium and sodium
can also be found but in less significant quantities.
There are no significant difference in nutritional value between
prawns and shrimps since they are almost similar in every aspect. The
difference in nutrition would probably be greater due to the location in which
the prawn or shrimp are caught or reared in.
